Singer / actress Janet Jackson is reportedly considering shunning record labels to release her own music, after finding herself without industry backing for the first time in her career.

The Let's Wait Awhile singer signed a contract with A&M Records at the young age of 16 in 1982 before moving to Virgin Records in 1991 as part of a record-breaking deal. She left the company in 2007 to sign another multi-million agreement with Island Records, which came to an abrupt end in 2008 after the release of just one album.

Jackson is taking time away from the music scene to concentrate on her movie career, but when she returns, the singer is open to taking complete control of her musical releases - despite interest from the industry's major record labels.

She tells tabloid newspaper The Daily Mirror:

"All the major labels have called and they want to sit down and talk about me signing. But I need to figure out if that's the route I want to take or if I want to do something more independent.

"The latter might be better, where I'd be able to call the shots when creating my own album. I haven't decided."

When the smell of money beckons, there might not be much of a choice to make.
