News: Salma Hayek & Ugly Betty
Source: World Entertainment News Network
Ugly Betty is one of the best series I've seen from the States. Ever since Season 3 of Desperate Housewives started to turn stale, I felt the ABC network needed a fresh new comedy...and I feel there is now something that probably will appeal to viewers from all backgrounds. Not that the others don't, but I think Ugly Betty tugs at the heart strings a lot more, and yet there is a great balance of comedy too.
Salma Hayek (who plays Sofia Reyes) has given her spoken out in support of the series, which she also is an executive producer of. She's insisting that the hit series challenges the traditional notions of beauty, rather than enforcing them. Hayek said that the show's title and content are meant to be an ironic take on conventional views, and added:
"The title has a lot to do with the tone of the show - it's sarcastic. I don't think Betty is really ugly, but what do we call ugly now?
"Some people think that anybody who is not super-skinny and really tall is ugly. Not for me. I personally have seen a lot of really skinny, tall models that are ugly and need to eat a little more to look healthy.
"So the title is actually sarcastic, we're making fun of it - we're not really calling her ugly, we're making fun of people that would think she's ugly. Personally, I think she's beautiful."
And so she is too! It's really true what they say that no matter what anyone looks like...at the end of the day it's their personality that ultimately makes them attractive or not.
Hayek isn't stopping there, as she has now asked close friend Penelope Cruz to guest star on an upcoming episode. She's been trying to find Cruz the right role ever since the show started in 2006. Hayek adds:
"We're going to do something with her, but maybe later."
So what kind of man does Hayek go for? Something like the type her Sofia Reyes character goes for? Well...her attitude isn't much different, as the actress won't compromise on her ideal man, and to be honest...why should she! She says:
"What confuses and scares me most about men is the way they are so weak. Well, most of them. That's why they pretend to be detached and macho because they are very weak and fragile underneath. They structure their lives so they don't have to deal with their emotions and feelings. That scares me.
"My mother always says, 'When are you going to get married?' And I say, 'When I find a man that has more balls than I do!"
I so hear you Salma!
